Cleaning a newborn’s umbilical cord with an antiseptic can reduce health risks

According to the survey, Pakistan has the highest mortality rate of newborn (with 53 deaths per 10,000 live births) in the world and up to 1/3 is due to infections.

“The risks of infection are highest in countries where most transmission takes place at home, often attended by traditional birth attendants who do not know [step] with the delivery practices of the poor,” said the study.

“There is no good conventions, such as cutting the cord at birth sterilization of instruments, and use of materials such as ash, surma [lead-based ingredients, oil and cow manure is practiced in many rural areas Pakistan, and is often associated with an increased risk of cord infection and death," they added.

Cleaning the umbilical cord of a newborn with an antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection by 42 percent and deaths by 38 percent, according to a study by the Aga Khan University women's and children's health. About 10,000 newborn babies were registered in the study between January 2008 and June 2009, which saw the effectiveness of three interventions.

A kit comprising a solution containing birth antiseptic (chlorhexidine) used for the umbilical cord at birth by the stage and once a day for a family member for up to 14 days, with a bar of soap and the message education that promotes hand washing.

The second intervention is the only antiseptic solution, and the third hand wash only. The fourth group was advised to adopt a standard treatment in dry cord as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
